Native to South America. Common name is “Sandia de Raton” or mouse-sized watermelons. AKA Mexican Gherkin. Flavour is like a sour lemony cucumber and crunch is exactly like standard cucumbers. Marbled skin resembles tiny watermelons. Even though fresh-off-the-vine eating is my favourite way to eat, these mouse melons are commonly used in stir-fries, pickling, salsa, desserts or martinis. Can grow up a trellis or bean netting. Plant when soil reaches 18C (65F) or warmer. Plant 6 to 8 seeds per hill and thin to 3 or 4 plants. Plant seeds up to 2cm deep. Don't pick fruit; instead cut from vine to avoid damaging the plant. To avoid bitter fruit, make sure these plants get adequate moisture a week or two prior to harvesting.
